Our First Amendment right to peaceably assemble and not to have our speech abridged is under attack by right wing extremist religious organizations. Fundamentalism is not just for islamists. There are in the U.S. Christian fundamentalist organizations that are out to save our souls and serve God by by shutting down our weekend educational events, parties, and SM clubs. These organizations are the American Family Association (AFA), and Concerned Women for America (CWA). Fox, which is now the owner of Myspace, is deleting BDSM related profiles.

Their tactics:

1. When an event is announced on an SM organization's web site a propaganda letter is sent to the hotel where it is to be held requesting the event be canceled. The letter bears half truths and false witness (I guess they don't think we're their neighbors) about the event to be held, and threatens adverse publicity if the event is not canceled. Daily calls are made to the hotel to find out if the event has been canceled. If it has not been in ten days, letters are sent to the police, local politicians, and the press. The daily calls continue until the event is cancel.
2. Selective enforcement of archaic laws. In some states in the U. S. it is still illegal to use anything but the missionary position.
3. The use of state agencies that issue liquor licenses and oversee enforcement of liquor laws. In many states it does not matter if no liquor will be served at a particular event, the terms of the license remain in effect and are enforced. The fundamentalists would like to keep it that way to help force out undesirable events, and oppose efforts for reform.

These tactics, especially the first, have been used against Spanksgiving, Kinkfest, Thunder in the Mountains, The Leather Leadership Conference, Bondage and Beyond (by Michigan Rope), and the Fetish Fair Fleamarket which had to move to another city in 2007 (news article). There was legislation in Missouri (follow the "Full Bill Text" link) directed against Beat Me in St Louis, (news article).

The Cendant Corporation, which franchises thousands of hotels and motels across North America, has issued a new "Controversial Guest" policy that discriminates against people on the basis of sexual expression.

"Controversial Guests" are groups that seek to rent their facilities for private conventions for consenting adults, and could include sexual expression activities such as cross-dressing, swinging and sadomasochism. If you're controversial, you're not welcome. Cendant has warned franchisees-- including Ramada, Howard Johnson, Days Inn, Travelodge, Wingate Inn and Super 8-- they could lose their franchise licenses if they allow these groups to hold events in their establishments.

Self-proclaimed "national interest groups" run by religious political extremists find alternative sexual expression by consenting adults objectionable to their anti-sex agenda. Groups such as the Concerned Women For America have pressured the Cendant Corporation to issue the "controversial guest policy" or face retaliatory action in the U.S.
